Be a part of Crestdale music!

The Crestdale Middle School Band is an award-winning band program that consists of 240+ students between grades 6-8.

Beginning band is primarily made up of students who have never played an instrument! Beginning band students can come without a basic knowledge of music and learn to read music, work with others towards a goal, and perform great music all by December! Come make music with us!

What makes band at Crestdale special?

At Crestdale, our band is a staple of the school!  While study after study have shown the educational benefit of being in an instrumental music program, most musicians will quickly cite the social and emotional benefits to being a part of an instrumental music program. Over and over, I see students face failure and come out on top with a new attitude and coping mechanisms in their arsenal to face disappointment. Band is where many musicians learned to become independent and critical thinkers who are willing to try and try again until a problem is solved.
What Instrument Should I play?

Choosing an instrument can be challenging! Here is a video that demonstrates some of the instruments in the band. When you start at Crestdale, you will have the option to start on flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, or percussion. We start all other instruments after our winter concert in 6th grade.

What I enjoy most about band is playing different pieces of music. I like playing the pieces all together because the different instruments sound cool with each other. Emaline C.-Flute
I just love to play my instrument and play with other people to make the music sound awesome. Owen U. -Trombone
Playing the huge Bass Drum because it makes me feel so POWERFUL!!! And also playing songs as a whole band because they sound cool. Liam K. - Percussion
I enjoy hanging out with people and just playing. I like that I can just talk to the people next to me about something and not get in big trouble and like that we just play our instruments. In my opinion, band is a fun class that is just hard sometimes and we can have fun. Nicholas M.- Clarinet

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Q: Can I take other arts like chorus, dance, art, theatre as a band student?
A: Yes! Our school is fortunate to allow students to take other fine arts! We have many band students who are also artists, dancers, actors, and singers! I recommend students take band and another fine art!
Q: Is previous musical training necessary?
A: No. The method books used in beginner band are for the musically untrained student. I teach the fundamentals of reading music as well as the fundamentals of playing an instrument.
Q: Are certain instruments for girls and others for boys?
A: Definitely NOT! Instrument choices are not based on a student's gender, but rather their desire to play that instrument. Instrument selection is based primarily upon the facial characteristics of the student, and, most importantly, their personal choice.
Q: Should I rent or purchase an instrument?
A: RENT! Renting an instrument will give your child the opportunity to begin in band with only a small initial investment. Your child can have the advantages of a brand new instrument, such as pride of ownership, freedom from error due to poor equipment, and the opportunity to be the best player they can be by having the best available instrument for their age level.
Q: Are private lessons required?
A: Private lessons are strongly encouraged for all students, but are not required. If your child takes private lessons, he/she will receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician (many of which have graduate degrees). Private lessons help challenge faster-paced students and strengthen slower paced students.Again, they are not required, but above average results are almost guaranteed!
